Re: Volvo --> Mitsubishi EVO III dubbele remzuiger upgrade

Re: Volvo --> Mitsubishi EVO III dubbele remzuiger upgrade

Re: Volvo --> Mitsubishi EVO III dubbele remzuiger upgrade

Re: Volvo --> Mitsubishi EVO III dubbele remzuiger upgrade
http://www.30forty50.com/forum/topic/15 ... e-upgrade/
There has been a lot of threads that hint around about doing Mitsubishi twin piston brake conversions, however there isn't really one good thread with all the information. While there are several that have good info here and there, none really have documented anything other than "yes it can be done, heres a couple measurements", etc.
With my brakes down to <1mm, I figured I'd take one for the team and get all of the bases covered in one thread, with ALL relevant information for someone that wanted to do this without having to piece together fractional/incomplete information and try to figure out the rest.
This is a decent upgrade for bite, but should not be confused with a Brembo kit, etc. This is not what that is for. This results in a slightly reduced (very minor) contact patch but increased biting pressure resulting in improved stopping. This is a good upgrade for people running stock wheels or 17-18" wheels with "reasonable" tires. Brembos etc are for people running ridiculous contact patches on the ground which is only a small few here, and honestly we don't need to get into a hoopla over tuned braking vs overkill braking, that's for one of the other threads.
If I have left anything out, please let me know.

The Mitsubishi swap or EvoIII swap is what we are dealing with here, but the parts are not nearly as difficult to source as many of the threads here have made it seem. Below is a list of all parts you will need, and their US as well as EurAsian donors.
Calipers:
Left hand part # MB950176
Right hand part # MB950177
Includes bracket when new, reman depends on rebuilder. The brackets can be purchased separately if desired, but I don't know why you would, it costs more in the long run. Additionally, the bracket is used across about 15 different US Mitsubishis. If a list is needed I could make one when I have more time.
US Platform: D33A 1995-1999 Eclipse GSX -ONLY- Must be GSX (AWD+Turbo). FWD, FWD+Turbo will NOT work.
EurAsia Platform: CD9A, CE9A 1993-1995 Lancer/Mirage -with- Turbo/4WD
Rotors:
US Part # MB618340, # MB895098, # MR389725
EurAsia Part # MB950886
US Platform: E39A 1991-1992 Galant VR-4 -ONLY- Must be VR-4 (4WD+4WS+Turbo). Fwd, GSX (4WD 2.0NA) will NOT work.
EurAsia platform: CD9A, CE9A 1993-1995 Lancer/Mirage -with- Turbo/4WD
Aftermarket known matches: Endless ER608-B; Mountain MIR-17. Thanks mygreyT4
High-end aftermarket rotors: DBA DBA4402XS. Thanks Volvo Steve
Brake Pads
US Part # MR389546
Honestly there are a handful of pads that work here; and some variations depending on model... ie, 1993 EVO and 1994-1995 EVO used slightly different pads.
Additionally, the above pads will cross over to several other interesting platforms... Full size Montero, Montero Sport, Diamante, to name a few.
For most people however, the big plus will be that there is a much healthier aftermarket for this pad model than the stock Volvo pads, and I would assume most people will pick an aftermarket/performance pad. In this instance, you would simply want to specify 1995-1999 Eclipse GSX AWD/Turbo (again hardtop mind you...Spyder GS-T will not work). If anyone wants a full list of vehicles that use this pad I could make one up I suppose.
Brake Shims
Part # MR389651
These are required when using stock pads. Aftermarket pads you will need to inspect them to see if a (useless) fixed shim is riveted on. If it is you will NOT want to try to use these.
Hardware
Lock Washer
Part # MF450407
Caliper bolt
Part # MR205902
For the caliper bolt, if not requesting by part number, you need to be sure you get 1997-1999 GSX bolt. The 1995-1996 is longer and not ideal.
-
And there you have it, everything you need for a twin piston brake swap, all with US sourced parts and factory part numbers. Substantial savings can be had getting aftermarket/reman parts of course, and availability is better that way anyway.
Now for any one that is still with me, a few pictures. Pardon the glare, it was a very early job.
Stock caliper
Twin piston mocked up (preparing to check 15" rim clearance, no problems)
Your basic parts:
Installed kit:
More to come..........
And here are some comparison photos of the calipers off the car:
One interesting tidbit; while the rotors are far and away the most not-talked about part of this swap on the forums, and also the most difficult to find (correctly), there is an alternative.
The stock rotors can be machined down 2mm (4mm overall diameter) and be used as-is. THe hat height is about 1/2mm too tall, but the float in the caliper will compensate for that. Otherwise just cut the diameter down and you are good to go. Ideally of course, the correct rotor should be sourced.
For anyone looking to match up manually, the correct rotor should be as follows:
Diameter 276mm
Thickness 24mm
Effective wear 1.6mm
Hub bore 69mm (69.1mm ideally)
Bolt center 4x114.3mm
Bolt hole 12.6mm
Hat height 45mm

Klinkt erg interessant!
